THE LOCAL AREA
Salies-de-Béarn is situated between two major rivers – the Gave de Pau to the north and the Gave d’Oloron to the south, where you can enjoy picnics overlooking the river at Sauveterre-de-Béarn, or walk down to the river to go swimming or white-water rafting. If you enjoy walking, it is possible to join the Chemin de St-Jacques-de-Compostelle at Navarrenx as it heads south to St-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
You will find a good choice of supermarkets, bars and at least five good restaurants in the town. There is a twice-weekly market, along with a golf club, a tennis court and many cultural events throughout the year. For a much bigger choice of shops and amenities, the cities of Pau and Bayonne are not far. The area has many excellent schools, including an International School in Pau, which uses the UK curriculum, and universities at both Pau and Bayonne.
