A Brief History of Rue de la Colombe:
Rue de la Colombe owes its name to the sign of a shop that once stood there. According to legend, in 1225 it was the setting for the legendary love story of a pair of doves. A wrought-iron sculpture there bears witness to this myth.
Rue de la Colombe, located in the former canons’ quarter north of Notre-Dame—an area spared by urban planning and Haussmann’s renovations on the Île de la Cité—has thus partially retained its medieval character.
Until the opening of the parallel Rue d’Arcole in the mid-19th century, the irregular width of Rue de la Colombe was approximately 4 meters. The houses on the even-numbered side were demolished and replaced by the rear facades of the buildings on Rue d’Arcole, widening Rue de la Colombe to 8.8 meters.
Only the house at No. 4, the Maison de la Colombe, which was part of Rue des Ursins extending westward from the Île de la Cité before the creation of Rue d’Arcole, remained in place.
This house, which was slated for demolition to straighten the street, was preserved by a 1962 decree issued by André Malraux, the Minister of Cultural Affairs.

Environnent:
4th arrondissement, Ile de la Cité (Notre Dame) is, along with Ile Saint-Louis, one of the two natural islands in the Seine in Paris with a population of 891 (census 1.1.2016). Considered to be the ancient cradle of the city of Paris, formerly Lutetia, the name "cité" refers to the fortified limits of Paris as they were at the end of Antiquity and which were the urban core of the medieval city. In both London and Paris, the name 'cité' or 'city' bears witness to the city's earliest past. Its name dates to 1725 and during the Revolution, the island was known as Île-de-la-Fraternité. It was Baron Haussmann's works that brought about the greatest change to the Île de la Cité since the Middle Ages: the entire area between the Palais de Justice and Notre-Dame Cathedral was razed, as was the eastern part of the chevet. Hundreds of houses and numerous small churches disappeared. Only two sections of the Place Dauphine and the Notre-Dame cloister escaped demolition. As well as several monuments, the island now boasts 4 green spaces, 4 publics squares and 6 quays. The Seine is crossed by nine bridges, which have replaced the two simple wooden footbridges that existed in ancient times. Today, the district is an architectural gem that epitomizes the French art of living and represents the image of the City of Light. It is a prestigious address, particularly with its many 17th and 18th century private mansions. Behind the anonymous intercoms of this 'Parisian village', linked to the rest of Paris by nine bridges, political and media personalities still reside.
